TV Land Greenlights “Happily Divorced,” Sitcom Adaptation Of Fran Drescher’s Marriage To Gay Man

When life serves up closeted gay spouses, write a television sitcom!

Art imitates life in Fran Drescher’s new TV comedy Happily Divorced.

On Monday, TV Land ordered a pilot of the Drescher-written sitcom, which focuses on the dating life of a now-divorced woman whose marriage ended after finding out her husband is gay. Happily Divorced focuses on how the protagonist juggles her relationship with her current boyfriend and ex-husband post-divorce. Drescher’s own 21 year marriage to small screen producer, Peter Marc Jacobsen, ended in the same way. The Queens natives, who wed after falling in love in beauty school in the 1970s, divorced after Peter came out to Fran more than a decade ago. Just like the characters in Happily Divorced, Peter and Fran have managed to remain close. Jacobsen will even be co-producing with Fran on the project.

Happily Divorced will succeed Hot in Cleveland as TV Land’s second original sitcom; the Betty White-assisted series is now basic cable’s top-rated comedy. Drescher’s last lead role came in the shortlive WB comedy, Shacking Up, which saw Fran as the middle-aged mom of a man who moves back home — only to find that his mother is dating a man six months younger than him.

Fran Drescher sitcom 'Happily Divorced' renews vows with TV Land

Fran Drescher sitcom 'Happily Divorced' renews vows with TV Land

The critics may have said nay, but TV Land executives have decided to stay wedded to "Happily Divorced."

Fran Drescher's sitcom -- based on her life with ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, who came out as gay after years of marriage - -got a second-season order for 12 more episodes, the network announced Wednesday. The new shows will appear sometime next spring.

"Happily Divorced," designed as a companion to TV Land's hit sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," got the thumbs-down from many critics when it premiered last month. But fans of Drescher -- best-known as the nasally title character on "The Nanny" -- have enabled "Happily Divorced" to average a respectable 2.2 million total viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.

"We are thrilled that our viewers have embraced 'Happily Divorced' just like they did with 'Hot in Cleveland,'" TV Land President Larry W. Jones said in a statement.

Trackers, what do you think of Drescher and "Happily Divorced"?

BREAKING. SABC snaps up new sitcom Happily Divorced with Fran Drescher. Will it go to SABC2 or SABC3?

Fran Drescher is returning to South African television. The SABC just snapped up the broadcasting rights to her new sitcom Happily Divorced - the question now is just whether the South African public broadcaster will asign Happily Divorced to SABC2 or to SABC3.

Happily Divorced which has been renewed for a second season in America was sold by Endemol Worldwide Distribution to the SABC. In this new sitcom of which the first season has 10 episodes, Fran Drescher plays a Los Angeles florist. Suddenly her husband tells her he's gay and they get divorced. They're still on good terms but have to live together because of the state of the American economy and both start dating. The story is loosely based on Fran Drescher's real life.

The deal has just been announced in Cannes and now the big question is: will Happily Divorced go to SABC2 or SABC3?
SABC2 (formerly TV1) was the home of The Nanny for that show's entire run which made Fran Drescher a household name in South Africa. The star, and the SABC, will have a built-in audience for the show on SABC2 who loved The Nanny.

Yet, the show now is a much better fit with SABC3 where it will thematically play better given previous similar sitcoms that's been on the commercial channel of the SABC like 'Til Death, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Accidentally on Purpose and Worst Week.

Fran Drescher Gets 'Happily Divorced'

Fran Drescher Gets 'Happily Divorced'

It's been years since The Nanny went off the air, and we've barely had our dose of Fran Drescher. Luckily, she decided to star in another sitcom premiering later this year. Joining her in creating the upcoming series, Happily Divorced, is her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, who also worked with the actress on the show that catapulted her to small screen fame.

On Happily Divorced, Fran Drescher stars as Fran (what else?), a Los Angeles florist who finds out that her husband of 18 years is gay. She's decided to re-enter the dating realm since then, but it's going to be tough juggling relationships when you're still living under one roof.

John Michael Higgins plays Fran's realtor husband, Peter. Happily Divorced has also booked stars such as Rita Moreno, Robert Walden, Tichina Arnold, D.W. Moffett and Valente Rodriguez. The series is set to premiere this June on TV Land.

You can check out the trailer for Happily Divorced on the show's official website. The comedy is actually based on Drescher and Jacobson's real-life experiences, having remained friends after ending their own marriage in 1999. He came out to her afterwards, and the actress revealed the news in 2010.

Seeing as how they're both happily working on Happily Divorced, the two remain friends. They've developed the series since the divorce, and it was picked up by TV Land with a ten-episode order. Drescher was only slated to write and produce the series at first, but she thankfully consented to being the star of the show.

Before she hopped on the project, Drescher briefly had her own daytime talk show called The Fran Drescher Tawk Show. She also teamed up with Rosie O'Donnell for the sitcom The New Thirty, which was unfortunately shelved. Now that she's returning to television with Happily Divorced, don't miss the series as it premieres on June 15 on TV Land

'Happily Divorced' Review: A Marriage Made in TV Hell

'Happily Divorced' Review: A Marriage Made in TV Hell

A premise by itself can't make a TV show great, but it can make it terrible. Such is the case with TV Land's newest original sitcom, Happily Divorced, starring Fran Drescher. The set-up is so painfully unfunny and flimsy that, even 20 years ago, it would've seemed like a bad idea pitched by some hacky network executive.

On Happily Divorced, Fran's husband of 18 years, Peter, wakes up suddenly one night in bed and announces that he's gay. If you're anything like me, you've already dismissed the entire series based on that simple premise.

Sadly, the show relies on that one joke to sustain an entire series, and the result is a sitcom as grating and annoying as Fran Drescher's voice. In the right context, she can be very funny, but the material here is so weak that every joke just falls flat.

It's a shame because Happily Divorced has assembled an impressive cast. Fran's gay husband is played by John Michael Higgins, who you probably recognize as a regular in Christopher Guest films, most notably as half of the gay couple from Best in Show. Fran's best friend is played by Everybody Hates Chris' Tichina Arnold and Fran's mom is played by EGOT winner Rita Moreno (which means she's won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony).

That's a high-caliber cast, one that Happily Divorced and its tired and cliche jokes don't deserve. It's a problem TV Land has had before.

When the network first launched original scripted sitcoms with Hot in Cleveland, it landed an instant success, and TV Land has tried to replicate that ever since. The previous effort, Retired at 35, failed for many of the same reasons that Happily Divorced is a failure: a bad premise.

Based on Hot in Cleveland, it feels like TV Land thinks all it needs to do is get a bunch of former sitcom stars, put them on a show together, and let the magic happen. That's misguided, and it's why just throwing Fran Drescher or George Segal into a show isn't enough to make it worth watching.

Hot in Cleveland is great because it honors the simplistic traditions of classic sitcoms. It's just about the crazy situations that four women find themselves in. It's not about a young man in a retirement community or a gay man living with his ex-wife. Sure, there was the initial premise of having three glamorous California women adjusting to life in the Midwest, but Hot in Cleveland doesn't rely on that premise as a crutch.

Happily Divorced is a gimmick sitcom, a show where there's some wacky and unusual premise to make it stand out. If the writing was good, it wouldn't need the gimmick. Seinfeld was a show about nothing, Friends was just about a group of friends. The best sitcoms don't have gimmicks, they just have funny characters and funny situations.

Happily Divorced has neither, and the sooner TV Land realizes why Hot in Cleveland is the only decent show it has, the sooner they can stop making sub-par comedies that try to replicate that success.
