TV Land Greenlights “Happily Divorced,” Sitcom Adaptation Of Fran Drescher’s Marriage To Gay Man

When life serves up closeted gay spouses, write a television sitcom!

Art imitates life in Fran Drescher’s new TV comedy Happily Divorced.

On Monday, TV Land ordered a pilot of the Drescher-written sitcom, which focuses on the dating life of a now-divorced woman whose marriage ended after finding out her husband is gay. Happily Divorced focuses on how the protagonist juggles her relationship with her current boyfriend and ex-husband post-divorce. Drescher’s own 21 year marriage to small screen producer, Peter Marc Jacobsen, ended in the same way. The Queens natives, who wed after falling in love in beauty school in the 1970s, divorced after Peter came out to Fran more than a decade ago. Just like the characters in Happily Divorced, Peter and Fran have managed to remain close. Jacobsen will even be co-producing with Fran on the project.

Happily Divorced will succeed Hot in Cleveland as TV Land’s second original sitcom; the Betty White-assisted series is now basic cable’s top-rated comedy. Drescher’s last lead role came in the shortlive WB comedy, Shacking Up, which saw Fran as the middle-aged mom of a man who moves back home — only to find that his mother is dating a man six months younger than him.
